Anne Shirley Puff-Sleeve Top

Anne of Green Gables

With her earnest manner and vivid imagination, Anne represents the full flowering of youthful creativity blossoming in a plain, gray setting. As an orphan who remains true to herself and thrives and enriches everyone around her, Anne is the perfect model for any child who feels like a lonely, weird outsider. In a quiet, no-nonsense household, she’s always grateful for her adopted home, but longs for the frills and puffs of the other girls.

This sweater was inspired by the dress that the quiet but observant Matthew gave Anne for Christmas, which was Anne’s first taste of extravagance after a life of serviceable but “skimpy” garments. It’s worked in a rich auburn color, a tribute to the beloved redhead, and, like Anne’s treasured dress, this sweater has two rows of the much-coveted puffs at the sleeves. Leave it plain for a modern look; or, if you like frills, deck the sleeves with brown silk ribbons (the rapid puff decreases form little gaps, perfect for threading ribbon), just like Anne’s cherished dress.
